Speaker Announcement: Tyler Tervooren — Adventure, Purpose, and Intentional Uncertainty
Category: 2014 Event, Speaker Announcements

Tyler Tervooren

A self-described “riskologist,” Portlander Tyler Tervooren challenges people to embrace uncertainty and take risks.

If he could harness the pulse and energy of the 700 TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) attendees in the room, Tyler would ask them to admit a fear they would confront by the end of the day.

“Each and every one of us should commit to doing something that scares us,” Tyler says.

Today, Tyler is an independent entrepreneur who has traveled to 20 countries, founded riskology.co and started seven businesses, including Brew Pony, a small coffee company that delivers Portland coffee across the United States.

Tyler has a goal to summit the highest peak and run a marathon on every continent. This once led him to pretend he was a Russian Mountain Rescue team member on a mountain climbing trip to get through a security check point.

Along with his own adventures, Tyler serves as “Adventure Czar” for Portland’s World Domination Summit and will play a key role in the inaugural Pioneer Nation.

He gets fired up meeting people who are leading their own adventurous lives and says social interactions bring him to life. “I’m an introvert who mostly keeps to himself,” Tyler says. “But getting out and meeting new people is exciting and helps me understand the world better.”

To Tyler, the word “pulse” brings to mind a heartbeat that sends life, vitality and renewal from the core out to the rest of the body.

Tyler says he draws inspiration from his friends and everyone he meets. He believes each conversation has the potential to help him think about what he does in a new and exciting way.

“Information comes at us so fast these days that it sometimes feels impossible to do anything but read headlines, hear the top stories of the day or make lists of things to be done,” Tyler says.

“But the truly amazing things about life are in the details. You can’t pay attention to everything, so my suggestion is to carefully choose what information you let flow into your life. And whatever it is you choose, look at it through a microscope. Dissect it. Dive in and really understand it.”

We look forward to hearing how risk taking transformed Tyler’s life when he speaks at our event May 3.

TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) Planning Team Member George Mihaly interviewed Tyler about his early years, foray into an online career and plans for running a marathon in Antarctica.
