Adventures are unique and intimate events, designed to offer our TEDx community unparalleled, behind-the scenes access to the people and places that make the local area so dynamic.
Incorporating Adventures: TEDxConcordiaUPortland Announces Events and Excursions
Just before Thanksgiving, TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) planning member John Petri watched a student finesse his robot at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Amid a whirlwind three days, John and fellow TEDxBeaconStreet attendees also had the opportunity to visit an organic farm and tour Boston on bicycle.
“It’s about a good story—a behind the scenes look,” John says of TEDx Adventures, a facet of TEDx events that offers hands-on experiences and an exploration of ideas outside the conference.
John, a Concordia University graduate and third-year TEDx planning member, is spearheading our first year of TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) Adventures—opportunities to expand and deepen our TEDx community with inspiration, connection, dynamic people, behind-the-scene glimpses and a fresh take on local gems.
With a kickoff adventure schedule for mid-January, TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) will offer a series of events and excursions leading up to and following our big March 23, 2013 TEDx event. Along with Bollywood dancing, participants will have the chance to tour tiny houses, practice improvisation, get involved with a coffee roasting and cupping, and sing with a people’s choir. And we’re not done planning yet.
“I’m excited to see what kind of relationships are formed and how they evolve,” John says of the inaugural adventures. “It’s much more than going to an event, attending and leaving.”
Experiencing the 2012 TEDxSummit in Doha, Qatar, last April piqued John’s interest in TEDx Adventures and introduced our planning team to a host of adventurous possibilities. In Doha, John and TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) organizer Michelle Jones not only met people from all over the world, but had the chance to dune buggy and ride camels, tour Al Jazeera’s headquarters and visit museums.
“There was an instant bond—we were talking about what kinds of events we wanted to put on and sharing cool ideas,” John says of the Doha attendees. He and Michelle knew then they wanted to incorporate adventures into our 2013 TEDx event. John’s recent trip to Boston for a gathering of TEDx team members who wanted to integrate Adventures into their own TEDx communities further fueled excitement among TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) team members.
TEDxConcordiaUPortland (now known as TEDxMtHood) Adventures will allow us to interact with attendees and speakers and other TEDx community members in a more intimate setting. With Adventures, we’ll provide a format to spread ideas that don’t fit into an 18-minute talk and we’ll be able to include more community members in our conversations.
“Velocity is that continuous process of finding a work life and personal life that motivates you to wake up every morning and most importantly, make you happy,” John says.” “It’s the constant evaluation of, ‘Am I following my passion? Am I doing what I love?’”
Our Adventures will provide another avenue for exploring our velocity and sharing our ideas worth spreading; our event will transform from a day-long event into a laboratory of evolving ideas.
